Best ROM for ZTE Blade/Idea Blade

I have been trying several ROMs to find out which one is apt for my Idea Blade. Saying more specifically, which ROM is capable of running smoothly on my 256MB RAM smart phone. I  have tested Swedish Snow RSL7(Android 2.3.5) and its a stable rom for day-to-day use. But then heard about Cyanogenmod 7.2 which is based on 2.3.7. Later I tried ICS ROMs but all are disappointing except Burstlam’s AOKP ROM. I’d say it is the best ICS ROM to run on a Blade with 256 MB RAM.

But I am not saying it is the best ROM yet. I have tested several others too, Paranoid, Cyanmobile Experience, Konstat’s, Tilal’s, JOYOS, etc. But I wasn’t satisfied at all. Somewhere I am finding some issue, either by lack of speed or lack of applications and all.

Finally I decided to switch back to CM 7.2 based on 2.3.7. I had to made some tweaks in this ROM and then its working awesome and I’d say its the best ROM for a blade with 256 MB RAM. Following are the changes I made.

I installed CM 7.2 along with GAPPS(Google Apps). There are many applications are included which can be removed to save some space. Now installed Root Uninstall, which is used to uninstall system application and user applications. You can remove Cyanogen Wallpapers, ROM Manager, Google Car home, DSP manager etc. These applications will run in background which will consume some ram. Also you can remove music visualization wall paper, android live wall papers etc.

Always remember, do not install any application on your android device unless you use it often. Most of these applications will run in background and reduces overall performance.

Now you need to install S2E and Swapper from Google Play Store. S2E is application to SD card  utility. Install it and check the options Applications, Download Cache and Private Apps. DO NOT OPT TO MOVE DALVIK CACHE AND APPLICATION DATA. it will reduce the performance of the system. Also in settings, opt to mount EXT4 without journaling and set read buffer options. Set the read buffer option to 2MB. Now comes to the other application, Swapper. This application let your device to use SWAP space so that some RAM space is freed.

Open Swapper and goto settings. Set the swap space to 128MB and swappiness to 10. Now save the settings and reboot your device. See if you feel any difference. Of course, you will!!

If you want to see how ICS performs on this device, you can try installing CM9 AOKP ROM. But it lacks FM and YouTube HQ and sometimes it is laggy. A better option for day-to-day use is CM 7.2 with above tweaks.

In a brief,

  1. Install Cyanogenmod 7.2
  2. Install root uninstall and remove unwanted applications
  3. Install S2E and Swapper for additional performance improvements
  4. Remember, do not install applications if you do not use it often

If you are uncertain about how to flash your rom read my previous posts.

Idea Blade and ICS ROM!

Android’s Ice Cream Sand witch (4.0) is a very smooth mobile OS. Its aesthetically pleasing interface has attracted many of the users. Though the official version is available for a few devices, there are unofficial versions available from various forums and communities like Cyanogenmod.

I have found two stable ROMs for ZTE Blade in a forum. I tried it in my Idea Blade and it was awesome experience. It was very smoother and faster than the gingerbread. It has option to enable to GPU acceleration making the device work faster. ICS’s new dialpad and UI is very interesting and pleasing too.

ICS roms need atleast 180MB system partition to install. It is possible to install it in Idea Blade since it has 220MB. Well, these custom ROMs are built from Cyanogenmod 9 and are experimental. Having said that, it do have issues. I faced keyboard lag in my Idea Blade. Also application crashes occurred. Still if you want to try and experience how ICS work is, you may try from below links. I found Tilal’s version is more stable with me. I just placing the forum address below so that you choose independently.

I have tested another ROM AOKP(Android Open Source Kang Project) based CM9 Remix 6.6.9. It is the most stable ICS ROM for Idea Blade. Since the phone has only 256MB RAM, it is advised to creat Swap partition of another 256MB using ROM Manager or through recovery menu. You can download this rom from here.

Cyanogenmod 7.2 RC2

After a while, Cyanogenmod RC 7.2 RC2 has been released. It was said that 7.2 stable release will be released soon. However it is noticed that, a subsequent release candidate is released for ZTE Blade and implies there may be a delay for stable version for this device. Whatsoever, with this release they assure many bug fixes and though a release candidate, it can be used like a stable version.

I am yet to check out the feature of this device though it was released on May 9. Meanwhile I was testing CM9, yeah the Ice Cream Sandwich version in my Idea Blade. Unfortunately it is not working after reboot and my SD card got corrupted. The interesting thing is many service personals yet to learn how to root an Android Device and I had to find out the actual issue from Googling and fix it by myself!

Well, as I said I am gonna check out this version and update you all soon. Stay connected and check out my previous posts. Please like and follow my blog and my facebook page.

Cyanogenmod 7.2.0 Release candidate ready for testing

Cyanogenmod, the popular android based firmware developing community, has released their latest version. This version, 7.2 RC1 is based upon Google’s Android release 2.3.7 and is the final release on 7.x series. Cyanogenmod official blog reports it has added a couple of backported features and fixes from Android 4.0, Icecream sandwitch. One of the major bug fix it claims is about SD card ringtones. Its earlier versions sufered from misteriously vanishing ringtones from SD card.

Cyanogenmod added support for nealy 20 new devices adding a sum of 70 in supported devices list! I tested it is my idea blade and found working well. Though it is crashing at times, its overall performance is satisfactory. If you are not interested in tesing, do not use this release candidate and install previous stable version.
