Ubuntu- An Introduction

Ubuntu, is an ancient African word for “humanity to others”. Ubuntu is an open source operating system. What is an “open source” means? Unlike Microsoft’s Windows and Apple’s Mac, Ubuntu’s cource code is open for the users. They have the option to customize it and to make any changes without any restricitons or limitations. Moreover, it is available for free of cost!

Ubuntu started its journey from an October morning in 2004. A new computer experience was introduced to the world by the release of  Ubuntu’s debute version 4.10, code named as ‘Warty Warthog’. Ubutntu is maintained by Caronical with many other volunteers who are trying for an open source evolution.

First verison of Ubuntu was based on GNOME. Later they have release a version Kubuntu, based on KDE desktop environment. All the versions of Ubuntu maintains a similarity in a way or other. In every six months Ubuntu will be releasing a new version, which makes people keep updated with latest technologies. Ubuntu assures a virus free, suprefast computing. With the release of its current stable version “Lucid Lynx”, Ubuntu could decrese its booting time. A 2 GB RAM computer can boot in a minumum time of 5 seconds which even Windows 7 can’t offer. Same is the case for shutting down. You can shut down your PC in less than 4 seconds! Can any other OS offer this much speed?

In addition to suprefast computing, Ubundtu offers more than 10000 apps for absolutely free of cost. You can download a variety of apps from Ubuntu software store. All these make people attracted to Ubuntu. However, a major drawback still users face is that many ,applets are coming in packages which can perplex a beginner. But whatsoever, with the upcoming release in October, Ubuntu is expected to increaes its users.

You can download Ubuntu from their official website

USB_Mode Switch for Ubuntu

If you are using an USB modem for the first time in Ubuntu, you may face issues in connecting it. Becasue, http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=tecare-20&o=1&p=8&l=bpl&asins=B003Y3BM0W&fc1=000000&IS2=1&lt1=_blank&m=amazon&lc1=0000FF&bc1=000000&bg1=FFFFFF&f=ifrUbuntu will recognize the USB as CD drive and hence connection will not happen. You need to install a deb package to make the USB modem identified by system. You can find this package at below link.

http://packages.ubuntu.com/karmic/usb-modeswitch

Install this and insert your USB. In Ubuntu 10.04, it will take some seconds to USB become ready. You can see connection disconnected message. Go to network manager and edit your connection settings viz internet provider, username, password, and dial up number.

Please post comments if you need any assistance.

How to change Boot order in Lucid

If you are installig Ubuntu inside windows, you may see that Ubuntu is set as default OS in boot menu. If you need to change the default OS to windows, you need to edit GRUB. In Ubuntu Lucid, you can do this as follows.

First open Terminal and type sudo gedit /etc/default/grub. This will open the Grub.cfg file. It will look like below.

# If you change this file, run ‘update-grub’ afterwards to update
# /boot/grub/grub.cfg.

GRUB_DEFAULT=4
#GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true
GRUB_TIMEOUT=10
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian`
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=”quiet splash”
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=””

# Uncomment to disable graphical terminal (grub-pc only)
#GRUB_TERMINAL=console

# The resolution used on graphical terminal
# note that you can use only modes which your graphic card supports via VBE
# you can see them in real GRUB with the command `vbeinfo’
#GRUB_GFXMODE=640×480

# Uncomment if you don’t want GRUB to pass “root=UUID=xxx” parameter to Linux
#GRUB_DISABLE_LINUX_UUID=true

# Uncomment to disable generation of recovery mode menu entries
#GRUB_DISABLE_LINUX_RECOVERY=”true”

# Uncomment to get a beep at grub start
#GRUB_INIT_TUNE=”480 440 1″

Here you need to change the line GRUB_DEFAULT=0. Change the value of 0 to 4 or 5. This depends on the position of your desired OS in boot menu. Suppose you need Windows XP as default boot and it is in 5th position in boot menu, you need to give the value as 4. That is number of position-1. After doing this, save and close the page. Next run the command sudo update-grub to update the Grub. Close terminal and on next restart you can see your default operating system selection is changed. Though we change the value, only default cursor selection is changing. Default boot selection time is 10 seconds. If you need to change it edit the line GRUB_TIMEOUT=10. Remember, whenever you change the Grub, always run update-grub command.

Reliance Netconnect Braodband plus in Ubuntu

in ubuntu, if you connect reliance netconnect modem, it will be recognized as a usb storage device and you cannot connect it as a modem. You may need to do some extra add ins to solve this. Follow the below procedures. It worked fine for me and I hope the same with you also.

Open your Terminal applet from accessories. Login as the super user by giving the command su. You will be asked for your login password.If you cannot login as super user, that is also fine. Then give the command lsusb in terminal. You will get the output somewhat like below.

Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 003 Device 006: ID 19d2:fff6 ONDA Communication S.p.A.
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 15d9:0a4c Dexon
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 0bda:0158 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. Mass Storage Device
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0951:162d Kingston Technology
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

See the second line Bus 003 Device 006: ID 19d2:fff6 ONDA Communication S.p.A.

Here you can see something like 19d2:fff6. In this, fff6 should be fff1. Then only modem will work. But you cannot edit this in terminal. You need to install a package named USB mode switch. Install this package and run the command lsusb again in terminal. You will get the output as below.

Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 003 Device 006: ID 19d2:fff1 ONDA Communication S.p.A.
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 15d9:0a4c Dexon
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 0bda:0158 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. Mass Storage Device
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0951:162d Kingston Technology
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

Notice the change of fff6 to fff1. Now run you have to configure the USB mode switch by running the command sudo gedit /etc/usb_modeswitch.conf

You will be prompted fr password. Enter password and usb_modeswitch.conf file will be opened. Simply pess Ctrl and H keys together (which is for replace command) and replace all ; characters from the file, save and then close. Remove the modem and reconnect after some times. Wait for a minute. You may see a popup as Network disconnected. This may not pop up in all systems. Now right click on the network manager icon on the task bar and select enable mobile broadband. Right click again and select edit connections. A new window will open named Network Connections. You can open the same from system preferences area also. Now go to mobile broadband and add new connection using add button. Now you can see your modem is detected. Select the modem, then select country and then select Reliance Netconnect as provider and apply. Now you will get Reliance netconnect connection settings window. Select the Mobile Broadband tab. you will see the Number as #777 otherwise update the same. Enter your netconnect number as username and password.
