Android’s Ice Cream Sand witch (4.0) is a very smooth mobile OS. Its aesthetically pleasing interface has attracted many of the users. Though the official version is available for a few devices, there are unofficial versions available from various forums and communities like Cyanogenmod.
I have found two stable ROMs for ZTE Blade in a forum. I tried it in my Idea Blade and it was awesome experience. It was very smoother and faster than the gingerbread. It has option to enable to GPU acceleration making the device work faster. ICS’s new dialpad and UI is very interesting and pleasing too.
ICS roms need atleast 180MB system partition to install. It is possible to install it in Idea Blade since it has 220MB. Well, these custom ROMs are built from Cyanogenmod 9 and are experimental. Having said that, it do have issues. I faced keyboard lag in my Idea Blade. Also application crashes occurred. Still if you want to try and experience how ICS work is, you may try from below links. I found Tilal’s version is more stable with me. I just placing the forum address below so that you choose independently.
I have tested another ROM AOKP(Android Open Source Kang Project) based CM9 Remix 6.6.9. It is the most stable ICS ROM for Idea Blade. Since the phone has only 256MB RAM, it is advised to creat Swap partition of another 256MB using ROM Manager or through recovery menu. You can download this rom from here.
See my previous posts for instructions on how to flash a ROM.
Ubuntu is a popular Linux distribution and Yahoo! Messenger is a popular web chat client. There is no official Yahoo! versions available for messenger. However there are many chat clients such as Empathy, Pidgin etc. are there in Linux and Yahoo id can be used there to chat. While talking about Pidgin, it is much powerful chat client. It has many features and one can even access Yahoo! chat rooms using this messenger.
Yahoo! Messenger provides HD video calling support. Though this option is available in Pidgin to use video call, it cannot be used for cam chat with a person who is not in your list. This often restricts the user from using web cam in chat rooms. As I mentioned before, there is no official version released for Linux distributions though Linux is gaining popularity day by day, especially in the case of Ubuntu.
There is a program called “Wine” which facilitates installing Windows applications in Linux. This is a windows compatibility layer and most of the ‘.exe’ files are supposed to be worked in Ubuntu. Go to software center and install Wine. This software is about 100 MB in size. Once it is installed, download the Yahoo! Messenger and install it. This will work fine.
It was in no time Android supported devices hit the market.Main reasons behind this are ease of use, affordability and thousands of millions of applications to assist in daily and professional lives. Many phone manufactures turned to android leaving there native traditional operating systems. The main drawback every android user is concerned with is battery life. Here are few tips to save the battery life to an extend.
Android phones are designed in a way that it always connected to internet. It consumes the battery a lot. Of course you may have some applications which require connection always. However there are instances like when you sleeping where you are not using phone at all. Turn off your data traffic during those period unless you are using corporate mail exchanges and want to sync your mail box periodically. Add a power control widget in your home screen and you can turn off your data traffic from there.
GPS and WiFi are high resource hungry compared to other components. You not always want your phone to navigate you unless you are in a new place or searching for a bar or restaurant nearby! Turn off your GPS location service. If you want your applications locate you, you do have an option in Location & Privacy in Settings. You can enable network based GPS(A-GPS) by which applications such as Facebook, Twitter, Google Places etc can make suggestions to you if you want to show your check ins to friends. Also, turn off WiFi when you are not using it. Power control widget helps you to turn off these services with ease. So is for bluetooth. Remember the rule, if you are not using a service let it sleep!
No doubt, you would have installed lot of applications installed in your device. Android phones do not have close button. If you are opening an application and closing it with back button still there will be some of its component services running in background. These are consuming your data, memory and finally battery. Use task manager to kill unwanted applications or install some task killer applications which will check for unwanted applications and fire them if found roaming around. If you are using applications seldom, better do not install it.
If you want your phone to save battery than showing you some eye candy animations, turn them off. Animations consumes memory and of course battery. Use either some animations or none.
LCD Brightness, it is hard to compromise here. There is nothing worst in a phone like a bad and dark LCD. You do not need to turn of the backlit at all, try to reduce backlight to 30%. Or if your phone has light sensor, you can use auto brightness mode which will adjust brightness according to the ambience. When you are in strong sunlight phone will automatically adjust the screen so that you do not have to look hard to see what is on display and it will not harm your eyes when you are browsing in bed time.
Turn off the motion sensor effect in LCD. Ask it not to rotate your screen when you turn the phone unless you are using some webpages where you want to see it in landscape mode.
Brighter wallpapers eat more battery than dark ones. Try some dark still beautiful wall papers. If you wish to do more, never touch your live wall paper section. Such animated wall papers will consume more energy.
Turn off the notifications: Most of the applications require data traffic. Applications like Facebook, twitter, email etc periodically connects to server to update. If you are not mad at social service sites or not craze to know what your celebrity does in Twitter, turn off notification options in them. Disable the notifications and try manual updates. In the case of e-mails, if you are not expecting any urgent mails, you can push your update interval to the maximum limit or disable it completely. This will help to save battery drastically
3G networks render fast data traffic and it consumes battery faster like that. If you are not using VoIP or video chat or streaming videos, EDGE/GPRS will suffice your request. Switch to 2G network when you don’t require fast data traffic.
By default google applications are designed to sync automatically. Your contacts, email, photos, calendar etc will be periodically sync with server. Turn off the auto sync option in Settings. Still it is recommended to sync your data manually once in a week.
